Why is My Refrigerator Noisy?

A loud refrigerator is very annoying. If the refrigerator in your home is a bit noisier than normal there are a few simple things that you can check while trying to find a solution. There are several fans on a refrigerator that could create loud noises. The refrigerator might also not be balanced too. Or you might have a compressor wearing out. If your refrigerator is much louder when the ice maker is making ice, the noises might be from a broken a water valve.

There are a few obvious components that need to be checked. Like is the refrigerator filled too full? A refrigerator that’s too will often cause glass jars and other foods and liquids to clink together. This can cause a lot of loud sounds inside of the refrigerator that is not ideal because the refrigerator is running and naturally producing a minor vibration.

If you have a model of refrigerator that has a water dispenser or ice maker but you do not have the water hooked up, be sure you turned off the dispenser and the ice maker. There’s typically a button on the water dispenser on the refrigerator that can be pressed to turn off the dispenser. And as far as the ice maker, you need to lift the metal bar inside of it. If the refrigerator is installed really close to a wall, it could cause the normal operating sound to seem much louder. This is a result of the echoing of the sound of the machine. Move it out a bit from the wall and see if that helps at all or not. A refrigerator needs to be about 2 inches from the rear wall of the kitchen to reduce the noise.

If it is not one of these basic and easy fixes, it is time to dive on in. The majority of the time, the fans are the reason for a refrigerator that is loud. There are fan blades that will often get clogged and dirty. Sometimes the fan motors do as well. There is a condenser fan and an evaporator on the refrigerator too. Many times the condenser fan gets a coating of dust on it and then needs to be cleaned often. If the coating gets too heavy it can wear out the bearings inside the refrigerator fan’s motor.

behind the refrigerator. A lot of the time you will want a wrench or screwdriver to remove the back panel. Once exposed you’ll see a fan behind it. If it is full of dust and dirt, get a rag and gently clean it off. While you’re in there you should look at the coils as well. The coils are usually right there and full of the same grime and dust that the fan is. Cleaning the coils will only take a few minutes and it will certainly help the refrigerator run more efficiently. This is actually a common problem that sometimes causes a refrigerator to run non-stop.

Turn the fan blades. Do they spin easily? If not it means the fan motor bearings are not working. This is an easy repair, as the fan assembly is usually a component that can be purchased online and can be replaced by just disconnecting it. However, before trying this, be sure the refrigerator isn’t plugged in. Do this same process for the evaporator fan in the refrigerator, which is typically located behind the freezer. This is not typically the problem, as this fan is concealed by being within the walls of the refrigerator. But, when the noises are coming from the top of the appliance that’s the area to check.
